Everything about PLAYTHIS in one place: from your first event to the screens on the projector.
1Getting started
Create an account via Start for free and confirm your email address with the link in the email.
Create an event in your dashboard: enter the name (e.g. "Sanne & Mark's Wedding") and optionally the date, choose Requests or Photos only (see Photo event with the Photo Pass) and click Create.
Go live: every event in your event list has a Live switch. When it's on, guests can join via the QR code and the link. Switch it off and the event is closed and moves to History.
Open the DJ screen: click the event. This is your control screen for the whole night, on a laptop, tablet or phone next to your DJ software.
Share the QR code: print the QR code, show it on a screen or send the print page to your client (see Printing and sharing QR codes).
Your dashboard on a laptop: on the left you create a new event and see your active events with the Live switch, the QR & share button and Open (the DJ screen). On the right is the History with closed events and the Playlist button. On a phone everything is stacked.
Tip: create an event a few days in advance. Your client can then print the QR codes and put the guest link in the invitation.
2The DJ screen
The DJ screen is your control panel for the whole night. From top to bottom:
At the top: the event name (with a pencil) and the view Standard, Dark or Light.
Three blocks: Requests, Top 5 on screen and DJ booth requests.
Two columns: on the left Requested, Played and Rejected; on the right Photos, Messages and Reviews. The number after a tab shows how many there are (for Photos: how many are waiting for approval).
Screens: QR screen, Photo screen, Combo screen and Test pattern, with the How-to for guests, Message to guests and Language of this event below them.
At the bottom: Print & share QR, Branding for this event, Copy guest link, Test pattern and Help.
Requests open/closed: close them and guests can't request anything for a while. Voting still works.
Top 5 on screen: show or hide the "Most requested" list on the QR screen.
DJ booth requests: switch the booth screen on or off, open it, show the QR code for the iPad or copy the link (see below).
Clear (on the right of the Requested tab bar): removes all open requests. Played tracks are kept.
Requested: all requests, sorted by number of votes. It's not a queue: you decide what to play and when. For each track you see who wanted to hear it. Tap Played or Reject. A rejected track can't be requested again; a played track only after an hour.
Played and Rejected: what you did that night. Download the played tracks as a CSV file, or send your client the playlist page (see After the party).
Display (top right): Standard, Dark (as little light as possible, for a dark venue) or Light (bright and easy to read, for outdoors and daytime). Your choice is remembered per device.
The event name is the heading at the top; change it with the pencil next to it (Enter to save); the screens and the guest page pick it up straight away.
Message to guests: free text that guests see on their phone and on the QR screen, for example "After 11 pm, dance tracks only".
Language of this event: on Automatic, every screen and every phone shows its own language. Choose Nederlands or English to put all screens, the print page and the booth screen of this event in that language, for example for an international crowd. Open screens switch over automatically. Guests then also see the guest page in that language, unless they click NL or EN themselves.
The DJ screen on a laptop: at the top the blocks Requests, Top 5 on screen and DJ booth requests. On the left Requested, sorted by votes: the bar shows how many votes a track has, underneath when and by whom it was requested. Photos, Messages and Reviews sit next to it on the right.
Below the lists are the screens, the how-to for guests and the message to guests:
QR screen (Show here or Open), Photo screen (with how many photos are waiting), Combo screen and Test pattern. Below them the How-to for guests and the Message to guests with the Language of this event.
DJ booth requests: in the block with that name you open a separate screen for a tablet or laptop at your booth. Guests search for a track there, request it and vote with +1. Requests are unlimited; voting is limited to 15 times per track per quarter of an hour, so nobody can push a track to the top by tapping endlessly. There are no other buttons on it (no photos, messages or reviews), and after 45 seconds without a touch the screen goes back to the start. With the On/Off switch in that block you turn the booth screen on or off on its own: when it's off, the list stays visible but nobody can request or vote there for a while (guests on their own phones still can). QR for iPad shows a large QR code for the booth screen: scan it with the iPad or tablet camera and the booth screen opens straight away, without typing the long address. Tap the square at the top right of the booth screen for full screen. The link is secret: don't share it with guests, because anyone with it can request without limits.
On a phone or narrow tablet the DJ screen adapts: one row of tabs (Requested, Played, Photos, Messages, Reviews) and the blocks stacked.
3What guests see and do
Guests scan the QR code with their camera. No app needs to be installed.
They search for a track (via Spotify, with title, artist and cover) or type it in themselves, and tap Request.
They vote with the heart on other people's requests. The most popular track is at the top.
They recognise their own request by the Your request label. They can withdraw it (tap twice). If others have voted for it too, the track stays on the list for them.
Fair for everyone: a maximum of 3 new tracks per phone per quarter of an hour. Voting is always possible.
If a module is on, they also see Share photo and/or Message the DJ at the bottom.
The guest page: search and request, with the requested tracks and their hearts below.Message the DJ: an ordinary question, or a shout-out for the screen.
Guests recognise their own request by the Your request label. Withdraw (tap twice) removes it.
4Printing and sharing QR codes
Use Print & share QR in the DJ screen to open the print page. You can also forward this page to your client (the couple or the organiser), so they can print it themselves. The page works in three steps. At the top they appear as buttons with the circles 1, 2 and 3: tap one to jump straight to that step.
The top of the print page: the name of the party and the three steps. Tap a step to jump to it.
1 · Size and style
Formats: A4 poster, table cards (4 per A4), tent cards (2 per A4, fold in the middle) and coasters (6 per A4, round or square, 93 mm).
Style: Light (less ink), Dark or Branding (your own colour or the event's background photo).
DJ name: show or hide it on all posters and cards.
Heading: the name of the party. Press Enter to start a new line yourself, for example "Ricardo and Nadine" / "12.5 years!". Next to it you edit the text below the QR code.
Step 1: choose the format, the style and whether your DJ name should be on it. You can also edit the heading and the text here.
2 · Preview, print and QR image
You see a preview of the sheet straight away. Right below it are the buttons:
Download PDF: instantly creates a PDF of the chosen sheet, exactly as in the preview and without page numbers, headers or footers. Works on any computer, phone and tablet. Print it at 100% (actual size).
Print: opens your browser's print dialog, if you want to print on paper straight away.
QR code as image: handy for the invitation or the group chat.
Step 2: below the preview are Download PDF, Print and QR code as image.
A4 posterTable cards (4 per A4)Coasters (6 per A4)
3 · Share via screen and WhatsApp
Each link has its own block with Open, Copy and (where useful) WhatsApp: this print page, the QR screen, the Photo screen, the Combo screen, the page with played songs for after the party, and the guest link.
Step 3: share with your client or whoever sets up the projector. Open, copy or send a link straight away via WhatsApp.
Coasters: print on thick paper or card (250–350 gsm) and cut along the line, or send the PDF to a print shop.
5Screens on the projector or TV
Open a screen on the computer connected to the projector or TV. That can be a different computer from your DJ laptop: the link works anywhere.
QR screen: a large QR code with the live top 5, the message to guests and shout-outs.
Photo screen: a slideshow of guests' approved photos, with a small QR code in the corner.
Combo screen (QR & photos): alternates between the QR screen and the photos. Handy if there's only one projector or TV.
Show here (next to QR screen) puts the QR screen straight onto the device you have the DJ screen open on.
Full screen: with the button on the screen, or with F11. With F11, full screen also stays on when the screen refreshes itself.
Screens refresh themselves after a PLAYTHIS update, at a moment when nothing is being shown. You don't need to do anything.
The QR screen: on the left the large QR code with the short link, on the right the name of the party, the message to guests and the top 5.The Photo screen: approved photos as a slideshow, with name and caption, and a small QR code to share a photo yourself.
A projector or TV in another room? Open the screen on a separate laptop or a media player with a browser and send the link (via WhatsApp, for example) to whoever sets it up.
6Guest explainer on the screens
With the How-to for guests block in the DJ screen, all open screens show an animation of how it works. The explainer only contains what you have switched on:
Always: scan the QR code, search for a track and request it, and vote.
DJ booth: only when DJ booth requests is on. Guests then see that they can also request or give +1 at the screen next to your booth.
Photo sharing: only when Photo sharing is on (in the Photos tab).
Photo booth: only when you've connected a photo booth (see Connect a photo booth) and Photo sharing is on. Guests then see that their booth photo also appears on the big screen. This applies to a photo event too.
Message or shout-out: only when Messages from guests is on.
Photo event (Photos only): only the photo steps: scan, take a photo, on the screen (and the photo booth, if connected).
If you switch something on or off while the explainer is running, it starts again on the screens with the right steps. You choose how long it runs:
Once: leave Repeat off and click Put on the screens. The explainer stays on screen for 45 seconds; then the screens go back by themselves.
Repeat continuously: switch Repeat on and click Repeat on the screens. The explainer starts again after the end each time, until you stop it (or after 8 hours at most, or when you close the event).
The How-to for guests block: the Repeat switch and the Put on the screens button. While the explainer is running, the button is green.
When played once, the button lights up green with a countdown.
Clicking again stops the explainer immediately.
With Repeat, the button reads "Repeating on the screens · stop". Click it to stop. You can only flip the Repeat switch again once the explainer has stopped.
While the explainer is on screen, the screens show no top 5, photos or shout-outs. Repeat is therefore mainly useful before the party, for example during the reception.
Good moments: at the start of the night, or after the speech when everyone is looking at the screen.
The explainer on the screen: on the left a phone demonstrating each step, on the right the step in large letters and at the bottom the QR code to scan straight away. The DJ booth step, only when the booth screen is on: guests see that they can also request or give +1 at the screen next to the DJ.
7Recurring events (residency)
Do you play at the same venue every week? Then create a Recurring event on your events page: choose how often (every week, every other week, every 3 or 4 weeks, or monthly, for example every first Friday or last Saturday of the month), the day(s), the start and end time and the period. All the nights then appear in a calendar straight away.
One fixed QR code: put the posters up once. Guests always land on tonight's night, and every night starts with a clean list. Before the start they see when requests open.
A separate QR code per night: handy if it's a different venue or client each time. You find a night's QR code by tapping that night in the calendar.
Opens and closes by itself: requests open at the start time and close at the end time. During the night you can always close or open them yourself in the DJ screen.
Calendar: tap an empty day to add a night, or tap a night to open the DJ screen, change the times or cancel the night (as long as nothing is on it yet). With Plan more nights you set up another period in one go.
Settings carry over: whatever you switch on in a night's DJ screen (photos, messages, top 5, booth screen, message to guests) and your branding also apply to the upcoming nights.
Every night has its own played list, playlist page, photos and statistics. You find them under Past nights.
Recurring events are included in Basic and Pro.
8Test pattern during setup
In the DJ screen, switch on Test pattern next to the screens: the test pattern then appears over all the event's screens (QR screen, Photo screen, Combo screen and the booth screen). Once everything is right, switch it off again and the screens carry on where they were. For a separate screen you can also open Test pattern ↗ at the bottom of the DJ screen, or playthis.eu/testbeeld. If you see the orange border and all four corners, nothing of the picture is cut off.
Full screen: browsers don't let a page start full screen on its own. So click or tap anywhere on the screen once (the hint at the bottom points this out), and the QR screen, Photo screen, Combo screen or booth screen goes full screen straight away. On an iPad or tablet you can also open the booth screen via Share → Add to Home Screen: it then always starts without an address bar.
Missing part of the border? Set the TV or projector to Just Scan, Screen Fit, 1:1 or 16:9 full (overscan off).
The test pattern also shows the safe area (90% and 95%), fine lines for sharpness, colour bars, a grey scale and the resolution.
If the fine lines blur into grey, the picture is being scaled: set the computer's resolution to match the screen's.
The test pattern: orange border with corners, the safe area, sharpness lines on the left and right, colour bars and grey scale at the bottom and the resolution in the middle.
9Photos on the screen
In the Photos tab, switch on Photo sharing. Guests then see Share photo on their phone.
Guests take a photo with the in-app camera (front or rear camera, 3-second self-timer) or choose a photo from their gallery, with a caption and their name.
You approve or reject each photo. Or switch on Auto-approve; photos then go straight to the screen. Approve all approves everything in one go.
New photos are shown first straight away on the Photo screen and the Combo screen.
Afterwards you download all photos as a zip file, for yourself or your client.
A maximum of 6 photos per phone per quarter of an hour. Photos are resized and sent without location data.
Connect a photo booth: is there a photo booth running LumaBooth? Open Connect photo booth and paste the link to the booth's fotoShare gallery (https://fotoshare.co/e/…). As long as the event is live and photo sharing is on, PLAYTHIS fetches the new booth photos about every half minute. They appear with the photos under the name Photo booth and follow the same rules: approve them, or use auto-approve. See Connect a photo booth for all the steps.
Share photo for the guest: Take a photo or Choose from your photos. The in-app camera, with the self-timer at the top right (orange = on) and the shutter button at the bottom.
The Photos tab in the DJ screen (on a laptop to the right of Requested): Photo sharing and Auto-approve on or off, open the Photo screen, download everything and Connect photo booth. When photos are waiting, approve them all at once with Approve all, or one by one with Approve or Reject.
10Connect a photo booth (LumaBooth)
Is there a photo booth running LumaBooth at the party? Then the booth photos can appear automatically on your photo wall, among the guests' photos. PLAYTHIS fetches them from the booth's online gallery (fotoShare).
Make sure the booth uploads: in LumaBooth, sharing via fotoShare is on, so the photos go to an online gallery. If the booth has Wi-Fi or 4G, this happens automatically.
Copy the gallery link: it starts with https://fotoshare.co/e/. You'll find it with the event in LumaBooth, or open the gallery through the booth's QR code and copy the link from your browser.
Paste the link in your DJ screen: open the Photos tab, click Connect photo booth, paste the link and click Connect.
Turn on photo sharing. As long as the event is live, PLAYTHIS checks for new booth photos about every half minute.
Approve: booth photos appear with the photos under the name Photo booth. Approve them, or turn on Auto-approve to put them straight on the Photo screen.
Include photo strips: when this switch is on, the booth's narrow strips (the print with several photos) come along too. Off = single photos only. Videos, boomerangs and GIFs are always skipped.
How many: each check brings in at most 4 new photos; if the booth has more, they follow automatically. Booth photos count towards the maximum of 500 photos per party.
Disconnect: click Disconnect. Photos that already came in stay; you can reject or delete them yourself.
Not working? Below the link you'll see a message if the gallery can't be reached or read. Check the link and whether the booth has internet. Still not working? Email [email protected].
How-to for guests: when a photo booth is connected, the explainer on the screens also has a Photo booth step: guests see that their booth photo appears on the big screen.
Connecting a photo booth is part of the Photos on the screen module: in Pro, the Event Pass, the Photo Pass, or Basic with the module.
11Photo event with the Photo Pass
Does your client only want a photo wall, without requests? Then create a photo event. Guests can only share photos there; search, request, vote and "Your request" aren't available.
Create: choose Photos only under New event. Photo sharing is switched on straight away.
Activate the Photo Pass (after the beta): under Subscription you buy a Photo Pass (€9.99 excl. VAT) and activate it on the photo event. It's valid for 48 hours. Pro or the Event Pass work too.
Photo screen on the projector or TV: this is the only screen for a photo event. It shows the slideshow with a large QR code fixed in the corner and the text "Scan and share your photo". The photos always stay next to it, never underneath. If there are no photos yet, the QR code is shown large.
Print QR: the poster, table cards, tent cards and coasters are about sharing photos and lead straight to the party's photo page.
DJ screen: photo management only. You approve or reject photos, switch on Auto-approve, open the Photo screen and download everything as a zip afterwards.
Guest explainer: for a photo event it only shows the photo steps: scan, take a photo, on the screen.
The DJ screen of a photo event: only photo management (with Connect photo booth), the Photo screen, the test pattern, the how-to and the message to guests. What guests see: straight to Take a photo or Choose from your photos, nothing else. The Photo screen of a photo event: the photo in the middle, the QR code large in the corner. The guest explainer for a photo event: three steps, from scanning to on the screen.
The QR screen, Combo screen and test pattern belong to requests and aren't available for a photo event. Anyone opening an old /scherm link automatically lands on the Photo screen.
12Messages and shout-outs
Switch on messages in the Messages tab. Guests then see Message the DJ on their phone.
Only you read the messages. You can reply to a guest personally; only that guest sees your reply.
If a guest chooses a shout-out, you use Put on screen to show it as a bar at the bottom of the screen for 3 minutes. While it's on screen, the button lights up green with a countdown; click again to remove it earlier.
A maximum of 5 messages per phone per quarter of an hour.
All messages as shout-out
Not every guest notices or understands the shout-out switch. So switch on All messages as shout-out (next to Messages from guests). Then:
every message has the Put on screen button, even if the guest didn't tick shout-out;
guests no longer see a shout-out switch, but a note that the DJ can put their message on the screen as a shout-out. They fill in their name if it may be shown; without a name only the message appears;
still nothing goes on the screen by itself: you choose which message goes up.
Deleting and the trash
Delete moves a message to the Trash. If it's on the screen, it comes off straight away.
At the top of the list you switch between Messages and Trash. The number after Trash shows how many messages are in it.
In the trash, Restore puts a message back with your messages, and Delete permanently removes it for good.
Empty trash deletes everything in the trash at once. Click twice: the first click asks if you're sure. Permanently deleted really is gone.
The guest doesn't notice a deletion: their message stays in their own conversation.
The Messages tab: at the top the switches Messages from guests and All messages as shout-out, below them Messages and Trash. For each message Reply, Put on screen and Delete. Your reply appears below it.The trash: Restore or Delete permanently for each message, and Empty trash at the top right.
13Reviews
In the Reviews tab you choose per event: ask for a review afterwards, now (during the party) or off.
Guests give stars and optionally a comment, once per phone per party (they can change it).
From three reviews, your average and the comments appear on your DJ page. You can hide comments; the stars still count.
You see all your reviews in your dashboard under Reviews. Rather keep them private? Switch it off in your profile.
The Reviews tab: choose when guests are asked for a review and hide a comment on your DJ page if needed.
14Your own branding
Under Branding in your dashboard you upload your logo and choose an accent colour. They appear on the guest page, the screens, the posters and your DJ page.
Per event (the Branding for this event button in the DJ screen) you choose a separate logo, colour and background photo, for example a couple's monogram.
That's also where you switch your DJ name on or off on the screens and posters.
If your colour is too dark for the dark screens, we automatically make it a little lighter.
With Pro you can hide the PLAYTHIS logo.
Branding: upload your logo, choose an accent colour and see straight away on the right how the guest page looks.
15After the party
Close an event in your event list with the Live switch. Guests can then no longer request anything; the screens show "Requests are closed. Thank you!". The event then moves to History.
Reopening is always possible afterwards: switch it back on.
Delete permanently removes the event with all requests, photos and messages. Download what you want to keep first.
Playlist for your client: every requests event has a Played at your party page with all played tracks in order, with covers, time and votes (without guests' names). Each track has buttons for Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music. With Copy list your client pastes everything into TuneMyMusic or Soundiiz and gets a playlist in their own music app in one go (Deezer and Tidal too). Downloading a CSV or text file is also possible.
You find the link in the DJ screen under Played (Playlist for the client and Copy link), on the print page under Share (also via WhatsApp) and in your event list under History (the Playlist button). Guests see the link on their phone after the party.
Statistics shows, per party and in total, how many requests, votes and played tracks there were, and the most popular tracks.
Statistics: totals at the top, below them the most requested tracks and most popular artists across all your parties.

17Troubleshooting
The QR code won't scan
Make sure there's enough light and a sharp print. On a screen: turn up the brightness. Guests can also type in the short link below the QR code.
Refresh the page once. After an update, screens and guest pages normally do this by themselves.
The in-app camera won't open
The browser asks for camera permission the first time. If it was refused, the guest can allow the camera in the browser settings, or choose a photo from their gallery.
Guests can't request anything
Check that the event is live and that Requests is set to Open. Free: a maximum of 50 requests per event.
A guest can't request any more new tracks
Each phone can request 3 new tracks per quarter of an hour. Voting still works.
No internet at the venue
PLAYTHIS works over the internet. If needed, use your phone's hotspot for the laptop and the screens; guests use their own mobile data.
